I had the idea to start a blog that remembers all the people I meet in my life. It would be a place to practice and showcase my hand lettering with each persons name, along with a brief memory of the encounter and encouraging observations about them. it would be fun for them to discover themselves as well as an aid to my memory…when I write a person’s name I have an easier time remembering them.
So when I ask someone for their name and spelling I can explain my little blog and they’d naturally have a curiosity to find themselves in it. I’m always amazed at how delighted people are to see their own names written with care. Last week for the Pivot Forward conference I hand lettered 80 names on notebooks we gave attendees and Pivoteers. It makes them instantly more valuable and people really liked them. Now we didn’t need to do that to add any depth to the content of our sessions…but it showed we were thinking of them with care as individuals.
I think if I gave a talk on design I’d like to get back to the basics of starting with caring about people…then imagine up all the ways you can express that as a company through your products and services. I could demonstrate this by asking someone in the audience if they have children…then if any of their children could really use a word of encouragement…then hand letter their name their on the spot and give it to them. One person is blessed and empowered to pass it on and many more see it take place. it might look like only one is really helped but it’s amazing how quickly word spreads when you really care and are willing to risk going for depth first before breadth.
